Test Taking Strategy For Sociology
Overview of Multiple Choice:
The challenge with multiple choice questions is narrowing down the choices to the correct one. Many of the choices may seem similar, but students must use the necessary critical thinking skills to eliminate the incorrect choices and arrive at the correct answer.
Read these tips to better prepare for taking any multiple choice assessment.
1. Read the question entirely before answering.
2. Break the question down and identify key terms.
3. When breaking the question down, pay attention to words such as “always,” “never,” “not,” and “except.”
4. Read over all the answer choices before beginning the elimination process.
5. Identify any choices that are obvious decoys.
6. If one of the choices states, “All of the choices apply,” “All of the above,” “None of the choices apply,” or “None of the above,” then treat the other choices as if they were true/false answers and relate each choice to the question.
7. It is usually best to stick with the first choice and not change answers.
8. If a question is too difficult, then guess. It is always best to chance scoring a point rather than scoring nothing.
Overview of Matching Tests:
These matching activities are usually based on vocabulary, so it is useful for students to create flashcards or other similar study aides to prepare for these activities.
Read these tips to better prepare for taking any matching assessment.
1. Read the sets of questions (e.g., terms) and answers (e.g., definitions) carefully. Spend more time reading the longer choices.
2. Match the obvious sets first. It may be helpful to note which ones have already been used.
3. Try to align the remaining choices as correctly as possible.
